The
Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Das
Cabinet des Dr. Caligari. Robert Wiene, Germany 1919, 72 mins)
This was the second
feature film scored by Minima: performed throughout 2008 in cinemas, festivals
and clubs, and then toured in the Spring of 2010 in the Picturehouse cinemas in
the south of England. The film concerns a travelling showman, whose
"exhibit" is a murderous sleepwalker. Angular, shadowy sets give a dark,
twisted feel to the film and, in the context of post-First World War German
society, it is a truly unsettling experience of mistrust and madness.
"One of the spring’s
coolest events... they sound unmistakably modern, but capture the film’s
disturbing mood perfectly." (The Daily Telegraph, 18 March 2010)
"For a performance to evoke the approachable aspects of Caligari as entertainment you couldn’t
do better than seek out the next performance by Minima." (Devon and
Cornwall Film, 30 March 2010)
