The
Seashell and the Clergyman (La Coquille et le Clergyman. Germaine
Dulac, France 1928, 40 mins)
The rarely seen 1928 French cult movie, directed by Germaine Dulac. A
40-minute dream world of forbidden passion - a beautifully structured and
immaculately edited film. The film was banned on release in the UK, with the
BBFC declaring "this film is so cryptic as to be almost meaningless. If
there is a meaning, it is doubtless objectionable." This was Minima’s
first film soundtrack - playing it extensively in 2006 and 2007, culminating in
shows at the Barbican centre and the French Institute.
